Sonic Tranced ...

so, the easy thing would be to cop to the retro vibe and invoke all that Miles "Bitches Brew" voodoo on the Sonic Trance ... too easy ... just like when the moviesoldier says "it's quiet - it's too quiet out there," peeps out the foxhole and gets a 9mm lobotomy ... this is not easy ... it was easy when we first heard Nicholas was making a Soul Patrol record for warner bros. - cool - groovy soulfunk outfit straight outta New O'leans ... then, when we first heard Sonic Trance in it's uncut, unedited 80+minute glory i can't remember who said "i don't think we're in Kansas anymore" (but i do know who the Wizard is: Nicholas Payton) ... one ex-wb staffer wanted to cut it into a series of EP's (yo, crimestoppers: an EP is just a pre-pubescent record) ... a smarter wb cat, ex-Buddy Rich trumpeter, all-around mensch Dana Watson worked with Nicholas to tighten up this diamond into the whipsmart shape you now know and love as Sonic Trance ... yes, it does posses the atomic impact Miles imparted when he launched the afore-mentioned "Bitches Brew" ... for Nicholas' fan's it is perhaps the equivalent of Bob Dylan plugging in at Newport ... and where is the extra 20-ish minutes of sonic trance? languishing on the beach with Nixon's White House recording gap and John Cage's 4'33" of Silence or the sound of one hand clapping? don't know ... the sonic trance shows were too far and few between ... what a band - what a sound - what a wonderful world ... the world's busiest percussionist (redundancy) Sadownick crashing and tinkling from the syncopated elve's workshop ... Nicholas and Tim Warfield blowing insane lines over a criminally cosmic vamp by Adonis, Archer and Kinsey ... and just who samples an old joplinesque rag? Nicholas do is who ... are you getting some very arch-linear clues from titles "cannabis leaf rag", "fela", "i'm trying to swing as little as possible" ... maybe ... didn't say this was easy, chief ... what is still easy is listening to Sonic Trance ... yoga to this motherfucker ... randall kennedy
